Remembering Sir Eion Edgar

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Sir Eion Edgar on Monday, 14 June 2021. Sir Eion was a determined warrior for advancing brain research for the future benefit of all people in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In 2015, Sir Eion embraced with enthusiasm and passion the Brain Research New Zealand vision to establish a national network of Dementia Prevention Research Clinics in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin with the ambitious dream to develop new treatments for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease to give hope to the ageing population.

He was the mover and shaker behind the establishment of the Dementia Prevention Research Trust with the prime aim to raise $10M to provide long-term support of the dementia clinics. As the founder and chair of the Trust, he was totally committed and led by example by the gifting of $1M in 2015 from the “Eion and Jan Edgar Charitable Trust”.

His leadership and legacy to the future of all New Zealanders will live on in the continuing research which has been ignited by his uncompromising dedication to fighting dementia.

Above all else, he was a man of integrity, compassion, mana and commitment to do the right thing for the future of the people of Aotearoa New Zealand for which he will be forever remembered.

Brain Research New Zealand is sending our sympathy, condolences and love to Lady Jan Edgar and all the whānau.
